The iditarod trail starts at Anchorage Alaska. There are many stops on the trail. Anchorage is the largest city. The first mile and a half is on city streets. Then it goes into the harsh winter lands. The distance from Anchorage to Nome (where the trail ends) is 1,112 miles long. They go through places called Golovin, Elim, White Mountain, and safety. Those are the last few stops. At White Mountain they have to take an eight hour lay over. At Safety they race across the beach next to the bearing sea. They don't spend too much time here. It is a very good place to stop if there is a storm.
